You must choose your food wisely. No matter where you go, never be afraid to ask for special orders even in fast food restaurants where you can indeed make healthy choices. On our program you ‘ll be able to dine at home, in a restaurant or get your food on the run and enjoy what you are eating.
By taking a few simple steps ahead of time to ensure you pick foods that will best fill you up, you will still be able to manage your diabetes.
If you always keep the ground rules of good nutrition in mind and eat a variety of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and avoid fats, you’ll be able to stay on task without going off the program and still feel full and satisfied.
Helpful hints
Be prepared: Carry along nuts, seeds, and your homemade granola or popcorn so you’ll always have something to quickly supplement your morning or afternoon meal. Remember, eating multigrain breads and whole foods, such as vegetables,
fruits, nuts and seeds will fill you up!
How do you make a good choice in a fast food restaurant?
• Think about the different chains in your area and what they offer.
• Think ahead – what do you really want to eat that will leave you feeling satisfied.
• Don’t order a biscuit, croissant or white roll.
• Because their choices are so limited, you may want to think twice about a burger chain as an option.
Burger chain don’ts: These foods will not help you reverse your disease.
• Most do not offer whole grain products, do not substitute anything white.
• French fries are filled with fats.
• Sweetened oatmeal is not the best choice.
• If you can, order unsweetened oatmeal with fruit. Remember, no milk.
• No dressing, meats or cheese.
• No sugary soft drinks or juices.
Burger chain do’s: You are reversing your disease; keep this in mind when ordering.
• Salad — order with extra vegetables on the side and fruit. You should ask for all the veggies and fruit you need to fill you up.
• Boost your order with a side of apple slices from the kids menu.
• Burger King offers a veggie burger with lettuce and tomato – Remember, no bun. Instead ask for extra tomatoes, lettuce, pickles and onions.
• Drink plenty of water.
