Type 2 Diabetes is becoming epidemic. Risk factors include genetics and early life history. In the womb, if a child is born to a mother with gestational diabetes, they may be predisposed to Type 2 Diabetes later in life.

There are also the big three risk factors, obesity, lifestyle and diet. Lack of sleep and stress are two additional factors that tend to worsen insulin resistance. More and more people have sleep apnea and are burning the candle at both ends, when you do this, it raises stress hormones in the body like cortisone – which significantly increases insulin resistance and that impacts the body’s risk for Type 2 Diabetes.

There are many reasons for an epidemic of Type 2 Diabetes and the public health community is very worried about it. If you look at the data, our leisure time has increased dramatically and we are eating more of a highly refined, carbohydrate heavy, diet. This definitely contributes to weight gain and the increase in Type 2 Diabetes.

There are many wellness centers around the country which aim to reverse Type 2 Diabetes. These programs are successful in a controlled environment, using diet and exercise, over a period of 14 to 18 days – some take longer. You are then sent home with the necessary tools to continue the program on your own. This certainly works for those who can afford the expense of an in-house program, but, what about those who cannot. I’ve found only a very small percentage of the population with Type 2 Diabetes can afford the expense of a wellness center, yet, there are so many people suffering who need access to these programs in an effort to reduce or get off their medications.

I often hear people say I have to stay on my medications to ensure I keep my blood sugars in check. I certainly do not recommend you follow any wellness program without checking first with your health care provider. This way your blood sugars can be closely monitored. By following my plan I feel certain you’ll quickly be making adjustments to your medications for diabetes and hopefully be able to get off medication completely.

If you look at the fine print of medications used to lower blood sugars for Type 2 Diabetes you’ll see many warnings such as increased risk for bladder cancer and a black box warning for congestive heart failure. Do you know insulin resistance is a leading cause of infertility? There are also a number of other cancers; breast, prostate and colon which are linked to Type 2 Diabetes and insulin resistance. The most beneficial way to lower insulin resistance and reverse Type 2 Diabetes is by the food you eat.

Diabetes is not just a concern for the diabetic, it is not just a concern for family members who have diabetes, the statistics show that it should be a concern for each of us. Fifty percent of us are destined to have significant problems with insulin resistance. By getting your insulin resistance as low as possible you have found a way to reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, vascular disease, certain cancers, blindness and the chance of developing Type 2 Diabetes which is the leading cause of non traumatic amputations. You can stop the cycle. I’ve been witness to it.
